MCE WORKING WITH PHARMA & BIOTECH COMPANIES
What are the eight forces reshaping pharma and biotech today?
Let’s look at 8 of the key pressures facing pharma and biotech companies today and how MCE can support you in each area.
How is the pharmaceutical growth model changing?
The blockbuster model that built the industry is giving way to precision medicine, specialised therapies and ecosystem innovation. Growth now comes from narrower patient populations, partnerships and faster cycles — which means it depends less on a single asset and more on an organization’s agility, its alliances and its ability to change direction quickly.
01
Portfolios are more fragmented, launches are smaller and more frequent, and value is increasingly created with partners rather than inside one company. Leaders are being asked to hold strategy steady while the operating model around them keeps moving — and to build organizations that can absorb that change without stalling.
Why is market access now as strategic as the science?
Regulatory approval no longer guarantees commercial success. Payers and HTA bodies require hard evidence of long-term value before they will fund a therapy, so access decisions are effectively made years before launch — in the evidence strategy, the pricing model and the value narrative, not in the sales plan.
02
That moves market access from a downstream function to a cross-functional discipline. Evidence generation, health economics, medical and commercial all have to be aligned around the same value story, told in the payer’s language rather than the clinician’s. Where that alignment is missing, strong science still fails to reach patients.
Why does pharma's digital transformation stall on adoption, not technology?
AI and analytics are reshaping every stage of the pharmaceutical value chain, from discovery to field engagement. Most transformations stall anyway — not because the technology fails, but because the surrounding organization does not change. Adoption depends on leadership behaviour, data literacy and culture far more than on tool selection.
03
The companies pulling ahead invest in the human side at the same rate as the technical one: managers who can read and challenge a model’s output, teams that trust the data enough to act on it, and leaders who redesign the workflow around the tool rather than bolting the tool onto an unchanged process.
What does genuine patient-centricity require of a pharma organization?
Patients now expect transparency, digital access and support across the whole treatment journey, and experience is becoming a real differentiator between therapies. Genuine patient-centricity is therefore a cultural shift in how decisions get made — not a campaign, a patient advisory board or a line in the mission statement.
04
It shows up in unglamorous places: whether patient input actually changes a trial design, whether support programmes are designed around the patient’s day or the company’s processes, whether teams outside commercial ever meet the people they serve. Organizations that get it right treat the patient journey as a design problem and staff it accordingly.
How has the role of medical affairs changed?
Medical affairs has moved from a support function to a strategic driver of evidence, scientific trust and healthcare value. It now shapes evidence strategy, carries the scientific relationship with key stakeholders, and increasingly influences decisions that were once purely commercial — while remaining independent of promotion.
05
Realising that potential is a leadership problem more than a scientific one. Medical affairs leaders need to think in strategy terms, argue for evidence investment against commercial timelines, and influence peers who do not report to them — all without compromising the independence that gives the function its credibility.
What replaces product-led selling in pharma?
Product-led promotion is giving way to omnichannel, evidence-based engagement across a complex stakeholder ecosystem — clinicians, payers, procurement, patient groups and digital channels. Commercial teams are no longer selling a product’s features; they are making a case for value to audiences who each define value differently.
06
That asks for a different commercial profile: consultative rather than promotional, fluent in data, and able to coordinate with medical, market access and digital rather than working around them. The channel mix matters less than whether the same value argument holds together across all of them.
Why do silos slow pharma launches down?
A launch demands tight coordination across medical, commercial, market access and regulatory, yet most organizations still run those functions as separate lines with separate targets. The delay rarely comes from any one function being slow — it comes from the handovers, the rework and the decisions that nobody has clear authority to make.
07
In a matrix, the people who move launches forward are usually not the people with formal authority over them. The defining skill is influence without authority: building alignment across functions that report elsewhere, and holding a cross-functional team to a shared outcome when every member has a different boss and a different scorecard.
What capabilities will the next generation of pharma leaders need?
Scientific or functional expertise is no longer enough to lead in pharma. Tomorrow’s leaders need to combine strategic agility, digital awareness, cross-functional collaboration and human leadership — and because that combination takes years to build, the organizations that start now are the ones that will have it when they need it.
08
The pipeline problem is structural: pharma promotes deep specialists into roles that require breadth, then expects the breadth to appear on the job. Building it deliberately — before the vacancy, not after — is what separates organizations that fill senior roles internally from those that keep hiring around the gap.

Beyond the Blockbuster
Smaller indications, higher cost per patient, and innovation that comes from partners as much as from your own labs. The model that built the industry no longer fits the business you run. This section is about building the agility and partnerships the next model needs.

What is the MCE Pharma Hub?
The MCE Pharma Hub is the pharmaceutical and biotech practice of Management Centre Europe (MCE). It provides leadership and capability development — open enrolment programmes, ready-to-run in-company programmes and fully customized programmes — for managers and leaders working in the life sciences industry across EMEA and globally.
What is the difference between open, ready-to-run and customized programmes?
Open programmes are public courses with published dates that individuals join alongside peers from other companies. Ready-to-run programmes are proven pharma programmes delivered in-company and run as-is, with no design time. Customized programmes are built around a specific organization — adapted from an existing programme or designed from a blank page around its therapeutic area, cases and priorities.
Does MCE run programmes specifically for market access teams?
Yes. MCE offers Winning Market Access in Pharma as an open enrolment programme and Leading Cross-Functional Market Access in Pharma as an in-company programme. Both focus on building payer-ready value narratives, aligning evidence generation with HTA requirements, and coordinating medical, commercial and regulatory functions around access.
Can MCE deliver a pharma programme in-house for our organization?
Yes, in two ways: ready-to-run programmes delivered as-is with no design time, and customized programmes shaped around your therapeutic area, real business cases and internal priorities. In-company delivery can be scheduled where and when you need it, including across multiple countries.
How does MCE help with AI and digital adoption?
MCE addresses the adoption side of digital transformation rather than the technology itself. Open programmes include AI for Managers: From Resistance to Results and Leading an AI-Ready Organization; in-company programmes include Leading Digital Transformation in Pharma and The Data-Driven Pharma Organization. All focus on leadership behaviour, culture and data literacy.
How do I get pricing for an MCE pharma programme?
Open programme fees and dates are published on each programme page. In-company and customized programmes are quoted individually, because scope, group size, number of sessions and locations all vary — request a proposal and MCE will scope the programme with you first.
Who are MCE's pharma programmes for?
They are designed for managers and leaders in pharmaceutical and biotech organizations: market access and pricing teams, medical affairs, commercial and marketing, digital and data functions, country and regional leadership, and high-potential managers being prepared for larger roles. Most participants lead cross-functional teams rather than single departments.
What are the eight forces reshaping pharma?
MCE groups the pressures facing the industry into eight forces: industry transformation beyond the blockbuster model; market access and pricing; AI and digital transformation; patient-centricity; medical affairs as a strategic driver; commercial excellence; cross-functional leadership across the matrix; and building the future pharma leader. Each one demands a distinct leadership capability, and each has its own MCE programmes.
What is the Mini MBA for the Pharmaceutical and Biotech Industries?
It is MCE’s flagship open programme for pharma leaders. It condenses the commercial, financial, strategic and leadership disciplines of a general management education into a format built specifically around the pharmaceutical and biotech operating environment.
What is the Pharma L&D Maturity Diagnostic?
It is a free MCE self-assessment that benchmarks an organization’s capability across six dimensions — strategic agility, cross-functional working, market access, digital and AI, patient-centricity and leadership pipeline — in twelve questions, and returns a scored profile with the programmes that close the largest gaps.
Where does MCE deliver its pharma programmes?
MCE is headquartered in Brussels and delivers across EMEA and globally. Open programmes run at MCE locations and virtually; in-company programmes are delivered at the client’s chosen location, virtually, or in a blended format across multiple countries.
What is The Future Pharma Leader programme?
It is an MCE open enrolment programme for high-potential managers moving into wider leadership roles. It develops the combination tomorrow’s pharma leaders need: strategic agility, digital awareness, cross-functional collaboration and human leadership, on top of existing scientific or functional expertise.
Develop the pharma leaders the next decade needs.
