Joerg vom Stein

Faculty PictureJorg vom Stein has more than 20 years of extensive business experience in various commercial leadership positions, latest as chief commercial officer in the diagnostics industry. Jorg has own market experience such as academic research, biotech, analytical instruments, diagnostics, Pharma, clinical research, environmental, forensics and food. He has special experience in leadership development programs, managing change and restructuring processes aiming for effective pan-European and global sales- and marketing organisations. Special competence areas which he brings to MCE’s leadership, sales and marketing curriculum are leadership development, strategic planning processes, strategic key account management, integrated sales and marketing management, customer value driven sales- and marketing strategy definition, marketing planning, marketing processes and integrated marketing campaign development.

Professional background

After his academic career, Jörg joined Applied Biosystems, where he became a sales specialist for DNA products.

Subsequently, Jörg covered several sales and international marketing management positions at Perkin-Elmer, PE Biosystems, Applied Biosystems, Fisher Scientific and Agendia. In 1994 he became sales manager for Germany/Austria for Genetic Analysis at PE Biosystems, where he was in charge of the business development and field marketing. He built and led a sales team of 7 people. He became marketing manager Germany/Austria and was responsible for the German marketing budget for a $ 50M business.

Later he became European marketing manager and was responsible for the European GA marketing budget ($ 150M business). From 2001 to 2004 he was the senior manager European field marketing for Applied Biosystems. In this position he was in charge of developing and implementing the European marketing plan and evolving a pan European marketing organisation ($ 500M business). Meanwhile he also was in charge of developing an integrated tactical marketing planning system : “GOSTT” (goals, objectives, strategies, tactics, tasks). He led a marketing team of 17 people across Europe.

In 2004 Jörg became the global director integrated marketing communication for Applied Biosystems ($ 1.6 billion business). He was in charge of building a global tactical marketing organisation, and developing and implementing global processes and policies. He led a team of 45 people across all continents.
In 2007 Jörg became chief commercial officer of Agendia, a leading international molecular diagnostic company from Amsterdam, who introduced the first FDA approved genomic profile test for breast cancer recurrence risk.

Education and qualifications

Jörg studied Biology at the University of Bonn and Tübingen in 1984. He completed his PhD in Plant Molecular Biology at the University of Bonn in 1988.

Jörg lives in Germany. He conducts his workshops in English and German.
